Performance Evaluation: About the Key Performance Indicators
One of the main questions of the ideas on photography is the relation between photography and reality.
Is a fraction taken from the flow of life true to that flow? What does it tell us about that flow?
Photographs of individuals who are unaware that their photograph is taken has often a depth, sincerity, a feeling closer to reality and meaning. The moment they strike a pose, the relationship with reality is interrupted - everyone who is on the frame is frozen until the shutter sound, with gestures and facial expressions that they liked themselves before.
Then how well do the performance appraisals reflect reality?
How genuine, sincere, and meaningful can be the photographs coming up during performance appraisals held in some institutions bi-annually and in some others semi-annually?
Clear, measurable, achievable, realistic goals that are foreseen to be fulfilled within a certain time are the ones we love the most.
It is a list of indicators for functions closed to interpretation, free from emotions, often translated into mathematical values: Key Performance Indicators.
We can easily distinguish between companies that actually do the performance appraisals by spending time and energy and those pretending and doing the perfunctory ones.
So, which one do we perform in our own institution? Perhaps it is necessary to invent new indicators of immeasurable performances in a photographic fraction taken from a moment when no one can pose!
